turning into a game of through the keyhole.

anyway my mpc is also getting dusty, taught me a lot of great things but its long to use it these days. i only have a 2000xl so i'd transfer all the audio to the computer to mix which just ate up time.

personally i've never used fruity, always used cubase from midi days and still do now. i know a lot of producers who swear by FL, i agree with the idea mentioned above, whatever works for you.

i started on fl years ago but only used it for a few months before i got reason, nourdays i got an mpc200xl, cubase sx and reason plus a synth, i agree with ghost the mpc is long when it comes to mixing tracks so i dont really use it too much these days tho i stil love the way u chop on it. maybee not fl for me but its all about cubase as the master of everything i do my music through, i dont think it matters what u use, u give a dope producer a shit program theyl still make a dope beat, give a shit producer the best program theyl prob still make a shit beat.

yeah my MPc's have all gone now , in the end I was just using em' for Ideas ... I use Recycle and that chops shit up nice, plus its got some nice filter settings and that and export it straight as a rex . hook up the midi keyboard and it ain't much different from an mpc ...

Reason to cubase to mastering .. Simple shit ..

But It don't matter what you use , like P said if your know what your doing and you got an ear any software / hardware will do .. I made my first album in a old version of cubase , it just make ish more time consuming but if you love what you doing it don't matter ..

I quite often hear tracks then when people tell me what they used I can't believe it.

I did a remix for a deep house label recently, the artist was real pleased with my mix, so much so that the label decided to do a limmeted 7" remix vinyl. I did the whole track in Reason, mixdown the lot, I felt a bit like I had cheated, but everyone was happy so win win I think.

I think vibes are most important now as most programs sound good and if it comes to it you can always get some one good to do your mix and master.
People are making great music with logic currently, I'm thinking I may have to learn it.

speaking as someone who was making beats long before the MPC even came out,
I can't think of a single sensible reason why it has been held in such legendary esteem in the first place...

what about sp1200's or s950's ?

what about plain old synth sequencers or just a drum machine and a DJ for chrissakes?

just where did the whole MPC-as-an-ideal-production-tool philosophy even come from anyway?

Lots of hip hop guys use the roland workstation thing too.

Its about the artists that champion the mpc as much as anything else and I'd guess very good marketing by AKAI.

They are also very simple to learn and use on the basic level.
They are fucking good though, people seem to love them for sequencer more than the sound.
e.g. Premo, he only uses the mpc60 to sequence and a 950 to sample.

What a wicked debate....good work shankers...

When I first started getting into making beats I had an akai s20, like a cheap version of an mpc/s950....i never got into it and it sat there while i dabbled with cubase and pcs. Then I got an MPC, and I loved it. It was a great learning curve and made me really have to work to get what i wanted from it. Nowadays I use Logic 9, and the only reason I got it is I'm making money from Music, so I can justify the cost. Kids today can get on limewire and get FL and make a really good beat....I'm actually surprised at the amount of work I get sent where everythings done in Reason or FL, its better than some of the stuff i get sent thats done on Pro Tools or Logic. Maybe because its easier and more user friendly fr someone whos not technical minded and can, as shank puts it, just put that initial vibe down without having to worry about what ms delay time they need.

MPC - brilliant....when I had nothing else to use and was everything I needed.....sold it now and dont really miss it, although saying that, I'm having to use a Boss SP505 for some live work and I'm wishing I still had the 2000.

Welcome back Crunk, hope alls good fella...

Funnily enough, I've been using the MPC a fair bit lately, basically resampling hits I've recorded with the mic and then tonking them in to PT.

I've also chopped some of the world's worst ever rap (Kanye's verse on Jay Z's Run This Town) so the studio now has a dedicated 'no homo' button. We press it every time Dom starts talking, which is quite a lot to be honest.

Ah Dom....how I miss his constant bullshit! "There were only 3 of these ever made and I've got one".....quick search on ebay shows 5000 unwanted copies of a minimalist house track that no one wants!

Having to use the SP has made me miss the MPC, but only for live shit......How is the future Tonk doing? Are we close to a Tonk Revolution on CD?

You be glad to know that after much heavy duty bullying Dom has finally stopped bullshitting (well to me at least).

It's quite funny cause you can see bullshit stories developing by the expression on his face but a bit of stern looking stops him.

RE: The next Tonks, there's a few bits but I've been working hard on a Pop/Rock project for a fair bit so haven't messed about much. I just got a remix gig that should give me full Tonking rights though... I'll keep you posted.

I'll tell Dom that you called him a bellend. 8)
